NM Trip Stats and info

So, after making it back from New Mexico and looking over the data, it's fairly amazing the things computers can do these days.

First, I realized after making it to New Mexico, that my trip logging was set up incorrectly. My trip down was broken into multiple short trips, and some of the trip data was useless (I was using default tracking stats and settings). So my trip to New Mexico data was rather useless since I couldn't combine anything.

So after setting up my tracking correctly, I present my trip (New Mexico to Utah) stats!
789.05 Miles over 11 hours and 40 minutes  with an average speed of 68.5 mph(cost is screwed up as it only tracks when you refill and I started with a full tank) Cost should be 50% higher at $105

(The flags are the stops)

Graph 1: Speed

The first graph to see is my speed. Red is faster, green is slower. My fastest being almost 91 miles an hour (probably while passing in a single lane road) to stopped at 0mph

Graph 2: Miles per Gallon

So these 2 graphs were miles per gallon (long term average), and miles per gallon (instant). The left I believe is the average mpg over the entire trip, and the right is how my mpg was right at the time of polling. So my trip average was 28.89, while my highest instant mpg was 52 (probably coasting downhill or something).

Graph 3: Fuel Flow Rate

This was an interesting graph to see I thought. It shows how many CC's of fuel were being consumed a minute for the trip. It ranged from 18.5cc/min to 460cc/mon over the course of the trip. It's somewhat similar to mpg except you average it by time instead of distance. You can see on the zoomed in graph the times where my cc/min skyrocketed and went into red. Those were times where I had to pass trucks on a single lane road, so I laid on the accelerator.

Graph 4: Altitude

Just a basic altitude graph of the trip. You can see the high point durango at 8300 feet, while Las Cruces and Orem are fairly similar at 3750 ft or so.

Graph 5: Ambient Temperature

Ambient temperature on the trip. I left at around 5:15am and arrived in Orem at 5pm. The temperature ranged from 23 to 59 F over the course of the trip. Coldest in the morning nearing Albequerque (probably around 7am), and hottest being around Moab at 3.

Overall, it's pretty cool to see this kind of data graphed for a trip. I was able to see the data in real time too as I drove.

Here is the Trip

So here is the route to New Mexico. I should have gas stops in Cortez Colorado and Albuquerque New Mexico.

The only weird thing so far has been that my OBD2 scanner told me my gas tank was only 81% full when I filled up the car for the trip today. That just seems weird. It made me second guess that my tank actually filled up and maybe it turned off too early at the pump. If I would have tried to top it off maybe it would have caught the fact it wasn't actually full. Or maybe tanks only fill up to 80ish % normally?

We will see. I'd hate to get 40 miles outside Cortez and run out of gas because I wasn't actually on a full tank of gas from the get-go.

Torque trip interface

Finished up the interface for the trip. I should be able to log the entire trip and see fun stats as I go along.

First trial..speed trip graph

My trip to work this morning as a trial. Red is faster, green is slower. The speed info was captured from my car in torque and then it combined the info into google maps with the time/distance.

Should end up being pretty neat for a longer trip

Setting up the car

So for my trip to New Mexico, I've set up my car with some devices:
  • I've mounted a Nexus 7 tablet in my car.
  • I've set up Bluetooth audio streaming for music.
  • I've setup a mobile hotspot on my phone so the tablet has internet access on the trip.
  • I bought an OBD2 Bluetooth device to use with the Android Torque app.
So this trip is going to be different than any I've done before. I can use my tablet not only as a media/music device that plays over car audio, but its also a trip logging and car information device. I should be connected to internet as long as AT&T has a signal. I've set up this blog to show my GPS location as I drive.

Here is my torque interface that grabs real-time data from my car's system.

This trip should be interestsing.

Just trying this out

Thought I would try this and try to log / show my personal location as I travel to New Mexico.
